Tar Heels Sweep Hurricanes 7-0 Friday Afternoon
March 13, 2015 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 12 North Carolina men's tennis team continued its stellar run of conference play after it defeated Miami 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
UNC moved to 14-5 (3-0 ACC) with the win, while Miami dropped to 5-7 (0-2 ACC).
Carolina grabbed the early 1-0 advantage after battling the Hurricanes and the forecast during the doubles session. Robert Kelly and Brett Clark jumped to an early 2-1 lead over Miami's Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjelm, then won six of the next seven games for the quick 8-2 win on court three.
Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray were squared at 4-4 in their No. 2 doubles match against Wilfredo Gonzalez and Kevin Bondar, but broke and pushed the lead to 7-4 before a rain delay suspended play. The Tar Heel duo resumed play and finished off the doubles session with an 8-4 win after a five-minute break.
The 22nd-ranked pair of Oystein Steiro and Esben Hess-Olesen led 6-5 on court one over Henrique Tsukamoto and Piotr Lomacki when the match was called.
After the conclusion of doubles play, the rain resumed and the match moved indoors where UNC continued to weather the Hurricanes.
Stuart DePaolo registered the first singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bondar on court six. UNC senior Steiro then posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court four over Tsukamoto to push the North Carolina lead to 3-0.
No. 86 Kelly clinched the Tar Heel win with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bernard Tefel on court 5. Kelly led coast to coast in the match and finished the second set off with a clean passing shot down the line to cap the victory.
Courts one, two and three continued playing after North Carolina clinched its third ACC win of the season. No. 24 Schneider overcame a set one comeback from No. 87 Lomacki to take the win 6-4, 6-0 on court one, then No. 116 Murray matched his teammate with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Gonzalez on court three.
No. 57 Clark, who holds UNC's record for singles victories, added one more to his total after he recovered from a 5-0 deficit in set two to win 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) over Christian Langmo. Clark now has 38 singles wins in his career at North Carolina.
With the win, the Tar Heels wrap up a five-game home stretch and are now set to hit the road for a match at Louisville next Friday at 3:30 p.m.
