Tar Heel Tennis Blanks Georgetown

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team improved to 9-0 after sweeping a doubleheader Saturday against Georgetown and UNCW. The Tar Heels, ranked 27th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Polls, scored shutouts in both the victories and are off to their best start since 1973.
"It's good to get off to this start," said North Carolina head coach Sam Paul. "We've been working hard, but we've got a long ways to go. We'll define ourselves in the ACC and how we do against the really good teams in the nation.
"We've got to stay healthy and we've got to keep working, but we've got a long way to go. It's good to get some wins early, but we've got to keep clicking."
In the early match against Georgetown, Carolina earned doubles victories from the tandems of Lenny Gullan and David Stone at No. 1, Sebastian Guejman and Derek Porter at No. 2 and Taylor Fogleman and Tristan Heinrich at No. 3.
Gullan and Stone defeated Georgetown's Kevin Walsh and Eric Conrad 8-1 before Guejman and Porter clinched the doubles point for the Tar Heels by defeating the pairing of Andy Clayton and Ted Tywang by the same score. Fogleman and Heinrich took down Etienne Paris and Adam Gross 8-3 for Carolina's third doubles victory.
In singles play, Carolina saw its success continue as the team posted victories at all six of the singles spots. Sophomore Karl Wishart, playing in his second dual match of the year, earned the first singles point for Carolina by taking down Kevin Killeavy 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Sophomore Benjamin Carlotti, ranked No. 93 in the country, earned the second singles victory for the Tar Heels defeating Eric Conrad 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Carolina would clinch the match with Porter's 6-0, 6-0 victory over Scott Maucher at the No. 1 spot.
Sophomore Will Plyler, Senior Aly Mandour and Guejman, a junior, also earned victories for the Tar Heels in singles play.
Against UNCW in the second match of the day, the Tar Heels came out strong earning the doubles point with three straight victories. Carolina's Guejman and Porter earned their second victory of the day defeating the Seahawks' team of Caio Piacentini and Rahul Rajkhewa 8-0 at No. 2. Gullan and Stone would also earn their second victory of the day by taking down the tandem of Dennis Myers and Grant Holland 8-6 at No. 1. Senior Raian Luchici paired with freshman Taylor Fogleman to best UNCW's Gustavo Bertei and Henrique Meloni 8-2 at No. 3.
In singles play against the Seahawks, the Tar Heels earned victories at all six spots. No. 5-ranked Luchici, who returned to the lineup at No. 1 after sitting out against Georgetown, defeated Piacentini 6-1, 6-1.
Carolina's other singles victories came from Porter, Carlotti, Guejman, Plyler and Mandour. Plyler and Mandour each scored 6-0, 6-0 victories over their opponents.
The Tar Heels are back in action Monday taking on the 12th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C. The match is the first road contest for the Tar Heels this season.
"It's a really tough match for us, but also a great opportunity," Paul said. "We're looking forward to it.
"They've got one of the best teams they've ever had down there so it should be great."
