Carolina Explodes To 15-1 Win Over Seton Hall

Chapel Hill, N.C.-The University of North Carolina baseball team broke open a tie game with four runs in the sixth inning and 10 in the seventh and cruised to a 15-1 victory over Seton Hall Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, completing a three-game sweep of the Pirates. Tar Heel outfielder Tyrell Godwin drove in six runs in the 10-run seventh inning on a two-run double and a grand slam. He went 3-for-4 at the plate on the day with three runs scored and six RBI. In the weekend's three games, Godwin batted 9-for-14 (.643) with two home runs, three doubles, six runs scored and 11 RBI.
With the win Carolina improved to 6-0 on the season and tied its best start since 1979, when UNC also began the year with six consecutive wins. The last time the Tar Heels began a season with more consecutive victories was 1942, when they got off to a 9-0 start. Seton Hall dropped to 0-3 on the season.
The game was tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the sixth. Carolina put a run on the board in the bottom of the third when it loaded the bases on three walks and Chris LaMarsh drvoe in Ryan Blake with a sacrifice fly to left. Seton Hall tied the score at 1-1 when John Bravette doubled to left center, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Tony Calabrese's infield single.
The Tar Heels broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Carolina loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk and Matt McCay drove in Jarrett Shearin and Godwin with a single to left. Blake and Rob Miano followed with sacrifice flies to give UNC a 5-1 lead.
Carolina put the game away in the seventh, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring 10 runs on four singles, two doubles and Godwin's grand slam.
Mike Bynum (2-0) scattered nine hits in 6.0 innings while striking out four and walking one to pick up the win. Derek Hurley (0-1) allowed all four runs in the sixth inning and took the loss.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium against Winthrop.
