Baseball Falls Short Of Sweep, Loses to NC State 7-2 In Finale
May 16, 2026 | Baseball
RALEIGH, N.C. – Carolina baseball dropped its regular season finale 7-2 to NC State on Saturday afternoon at Doak Field.
Â
The No. 2 Tar Heels (43-10-1, 22-8 ACC) couldn't produce enough firepower in the finale to complete the sweep of the Wolfpack. UNC will finish the regular season with a 14-3 road record (.825), the team's best road win percentage in 92 years.
Â
After an offensive explosion in yesterday's run-rule, it was a much slower day at the plate for the Heels who logged more walks (6) than hits (4). It's the team's fewest hits produced since being held to three against Louisville on March 21.
Â
Cooper Nicholson put the first run on the board for Carolina in the top of the second with a solo shot to left center. It was the 14th home run of the year for the junior third baseman and extended his active hitting streak to 15, the longest of any Heel this season.
Â
Gavin Gallaher added the only other scoring for UNC on the day with a solo homer of his own in the eighth. His 11th on the year and 36th in his career. He sits just four shy of cracking the program's career top-10 list. Â
Â
Five Carolina arms took the mound on Saturday, combining to allow seven runs on 13 hits. Folger Boaz got the start and was saddled with the loss, moving his record to 3-2 in 2026. The scoring came in bunches for the Wolfpack, who did all their damage in three innings.
Â
The Tar Heels will now transition into the postseason with the ACC Tournament in Charlotte on deck next week. With their double bye and the No. 2 seed secured, Carolina will play on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
