Schaffner’s Big Day Sends Baseball Into ACC Semis With 10-4 Win Over Hokies
May 22, 2026 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four RBIs from leadoff man Jake Schaffner sparked the offense and helped Carolina baseball to a 10-4 victory over Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals of the ACC Baseball Championship at Truist Field on Friday afternoon.
The No. 2 Tar Heels (44-10-1) move into the semifinals for the second straight season with a complete offensive effort paired with pitching that shutdown the No. 7 seed Hokie attack down the stretch. UNC improves to 21-0 when scoring 10+ runs this season.
Schaffner made huge contributions throughout the contest. His RBIs gave Carolina their first lead with a two-out double in the second, tied the game with a bases-loaded HBP in the fourth, and then delivered the knockout blow with a triple in the eighth.
His fellow First Team All-ACC honoree Owen Hull provided clutch hits as well, as all three of his runs batted in came with two outs. UNC scored eight of its 10 runs with two outs against them in the game.
Overall, the Heels were 7-15 (.467) when down to their final out in a frame while also going 4-for-8 in the leadoff spot and 5-14 (.357) with runners in scoring position. Effective hitting in every aspect in their postseason opener.
Macon Winslow put the final cherry on top with a 423 ft. home run to straightaway center. The blast put Carolina in double digits on the day and Winslow in double digits homers on the season, a new career high for the junior.
Newly crowned ACC Freshman of the Year Caden Glauber picked up the win with a lengthy outing that went 5.1 innings with six strikeouts, three hits, and one run. It was the longest postseason appearance by a Tar Heel reliever since Will Sandy went 5.2 IP in the 2019 Chapel Hill Super Regional.
The Tar Heels await the winner of the final quarterfinal between Florida State and Pitt being played right now. First pitch for Saturday's semifinal is currently set for 3 p.m. ET.
