Heels Hold Off Winthrop, 7-5

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Tyrell Godwin drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple and Kyle Snyder struck out 10 as the University of North Carolina defeated Winthrop, 7-5, Thursday afternoon at chilly Boshamer Stadium. With the win, Carolina improved to 7-0 in 1999, its best start since beginning the 1942 season with a 9-0 mark. Winthrop fell to 6-2 with the loss.
Snyder (3-0) allowed four runs, two of them earned, and walked two in 6.0 innings to pick up his third victory of the season. Derrick DePriest pitched the final 2.1 innings for his first save of the year.
Carolina got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Tar Heels loaded the bases with no outs on an error, a single and a walk, and Godwin drove in three with a bases-loaded triple over centerfielder Darrell Coterell*s head. The Heels added their fourth run when Godwin scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Earey.
The Tar Heels added three more runs in the fourth on a solo home run by Dan Moylan and a pair of unearned runs that scored on two Winthrop errors.
Winthrop scored four runs in the seventh, loading the bases on a walk, a single and a hit batsman. Brett Busha then hit a two-run double and two more runs scored on a Chris LaMarsh throwing error.
The Eagles added another run in the seventh on a bases loaded walk issued by Tar Heel reliever Michael Horney. DePriest entered the game with the bases loaded and got Jason Colson to ground out and end the threat, stranding three baserunners.
Carolina begins a three-game series with Temple Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
