CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by seven combined goals from brothers Conor and Dan Denihan, third-ranked Johns Hopkins defeated the fourteenth-ranked North Carolina men's lacrosse team 21-12 Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. Junior Conor Denihan led all scorers with four goals and one assist, his brother Dan added three goals and one assist in front of the 1,773 fans at Fetzer Field.
The game was a back and forth battle much of the first quarter, with no team leading by more than two goals. The Tar Heels entered the second quarter with a 4-3 edge over the Blue Jays, but the lead wouldn't last for long. Hopkins rattled of seven goals in the second, more than any Tar Heel opponent this season, to open up the lead 10-7 a at the half. The flurry of goals was led by Blue Jay junior Dave Rabuano, who had two in the second and finished with a career high three goals. Tar Heels Ryan Beard, Matt Crofton and Jeff Sonke all scored in the second to keep the Heels within three.
The Blue Jays came out of the gates quickly and set the tone for the second half striking 31 seconds into the third on a goal by Dan Denihan. Conor Denihan added a short handed goal just over a minute later to open up the Blue Jay lead to 12-7. Justin Bowman scored his second of three goals 30 second later, but it wasn't enough quiet the Hopkins offense that went on to outscore the Heels 6-2 in the third.
Carolina junior Matt Crofton scored two goals in the fourth and senior Todd McElduff added one to close the gap in the score, but it didn't match the Blue Jays' four goals in the fourth as Johns Hopkins went on to win it fifth straight against the Tar Heels, 21-12.
The 21 goals marks the most any Carolina opponent has scored in Chapel Hill since 1978 when Maryland scored 23 at Fetzer Field. It is also the most goals Hopkins has scored against Carolina in the 27 previous meetings.
For the first time this season, all three Tar Heel goal keepers played in one game. Freshman Kris Blindenbacher had his third start of the season and left the game at the half with six saves and ten goals allowed. Senior Jarron Harkness played most of the second and left the game at the 4:38 mark with 11 saves and ten goals allowed. Sophomore Robert D'Urso finished the game in the net for the Heels and allowed one goal.
