CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- A seven goal performance by fifth-ranked Virginia in the fourth quarter proved to be more than the fifteenth-ranked Tar Heels could handle as the Heels dropped their third straight game 17-14 to Virginia Saturday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.
The game was a nip and tuck affair throughout and proved to be a game of scoring runs. Virginia held an 8-5 lead at halftime as eight different players tallied for the Cavaliers in the opening 30 minutes.
The halftime break proved beneficial to the Tar Heels as they stormed out with four straight goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to take their first lead of the game at 9-8. During the surge, North Carolina's defense, led by junior Todd Maher, was particularly effective at stifling the Virginia attack. The Cavaliers tied the score at nine at the 8:25 mark of the third quarter on their first shot of the period on a goal by Tucker Radebaugh. Carolina regained the lead on Chase Martin's fourth goal of the afternoon just over a minute later. A Virginia goal by Henry Oakey with 30 seconds left in the third period enabled Virginia to tie the score again at 10 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Virginia struck first in the final quarter, regaining the lead on Hanley Holcomb's extra man goal. The ensuing four minutes saw a flurry of scoring as North Carolina rallied to tie the score twice. Radebaugh's third goal of the afternoon at the 5:31 mark of the fourth quarter proved to be the winner for UVa. Tar Heel senior Justin Bowman brought the Heels to within one at 15-14 with 5:15 remaining, but that's where the scoring would stop for the Heels. Virginia controlled the ball the rest of the way, adding its final goal with 2:16 left to play.
Senior goaltender Jarron Harkness finished the game with 13 saves, while Virginia goalie Derek Kenney had 10 saves.
The win improves the Cavaliers record to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. Carolina has its next three games on the road as the Heels travel to face Duke, UMBC and Delaware. The Heels then return home to host the ACC Men's Lacrosse Tournament April 23-25 at Fetzer Field.
