Men's Tennis Team Wins Third in a Row

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 47th-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team won its third successive dual match of the 1999 season Saturday morning, defeating the UNC-Charlotte 49ers 5-2 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels were scheduled to play a second dual match on Saturday, hosting UNC-Asheville at 4 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Both matches Saturday were played scheduled to be played indoors.
With the win over the 49ers, UNC improved to 3-0 on the season, while the 49ers fell to 0-2 on the campaign. Carolina sophomore David Cheatwood, a Fayetteville, N.C. native, made his first career start at the #1 singles position, defeating Jan Pollmueller of UNCC, 6-2, 6-2. Tar Heel senior co-captain Michael Grass clinched the match for the Tar Heels at #3 singles, coming from behind to beat Sasha Parc, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Grass had to overcome two match points in the second set to earn the win. Grass trailed 6-4, 5-4, 40-15, but staved off the next two points and ended up winning the last nine games of the match.
After meeting UNC-Asheville this afternoon at 4 p.m., UNC will be off one week before hosting ninth-ranked South Carolina next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
