Max Norris

An experienced coach at both the college and professional levels, Max Norris returned to UNC and joined Brian Kalbas' staff as the women's tennis team's director of operations in 2024.
Previously, Norris served as head coach at Ball State for 10 seasons. At a program that never finished second in the MAC standings prior to his arrival, the team finished in first or second place in seven of nine seasons (excluding the COVID shortened season of 2020). Under his guidance, the program claimed seven different MAC championships and had singles and doubles players ranked in the ITA national rankings for the first time in program history.Â
He also served as assistant coach at Alabama 2012-13. During that time, he helped the 2013 Crimson Tide to their first ever Sweet 16 appearance in ITA Indoors and in the NCAA team championships. During that time, Norris helped recruit Erin Routliffe, who went on to win two NCAA doubles championships and achieved a world number 1 ranking in WTA doubles in 2024.Â
Norris began his coaching career at Carolina from 2010-12 as Kalbas’ volunteer coach. In that time, Norris worked with three All-Americas and the team finished in the top eight nationally both seasons.Â
Most recently, Norris has been serving as a part time coach to WTA doubles player Ingrid Neel, who won the 2023 Tokyo 500 and the 2024 s-Hertogenbosch 250 doubles titles. Additionally Norris, assisted Erin Routliffe and Asia Muhammad in their Mason 1000 championship in 2024. He has had stints coaching eight different WTA players.
Norris worked Carolina tennis camps for nine years alongside Kalbas and UNC men's head coach Sam Paul. He also served as assistant director for Alabama tennis camps in 2014 and 2018 and assistant director for UNC camps in 2012.
