DUISBURG, Germany – Rising junior Lindsey Troftgruben represented North Carolina Rowing on the world stage, earning a bronze medal this past week with the women's eight at the 2025 World University Games. Incoming freshman Sarah Knox Harper and her boat placed first in the Mixed Quadruple B Finals.
The 2025 FISU World University Games held from July 16-27 brought together student-athletes from around the globe to compete in 18 sports with over 8,500 participants. 27 rowers both male and female, represented the United States including Troftgruben.Â
Following training in Michigan, Troftgruben and the rest of the women's eight boat headed to Germany to test their speed. Standing out for the United States, Troftgruben and her boat claimed the bronze medal after racing its way past Germany at the 500 mark to earn a spot on the podium.
"It was an absolute honor to represent my country. It was amazing to see athletes from 150 different countries come together to compete and to unite around sports," said Troftgruben. "Crossing the finish line and hearing the fans cheering is something I will never forget."
This past season for the Tar Heels, Troftgruben competed with the V8 boat all season and assisted Carolina to multiple first-place finishes in regattas throughout the year. At the 2025 ACC Rowing Championships, the V8 placed first in the petite final. A standout in the classroom, Troftgruben also earned a spot on the ACC All-Academic Team and was honored as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete.
Competing in the mixed sculls, Harper and her boat placed fourth in their heat to earn a spot in the B Final. With a time of 6:59.68, the crew came in first in their final race of the games.
"Rowing at the World University Games was an amazing experience. The competition was fierce and the overall energy was amazing, and it was an honor to represent the United States on an international stage," said Knox. "I'm so grateful for the opportunity."
Joining the Tar Heels this fall from Raleigh, Harper boasts numerous years of club experience between Ready Set Row and the Triangle Rowing Club.
