Fencing Finds Success At Junior Olympics

CHARLOTTE, NC - Sophia Kovacs continued her dominant redshirt senior campaign as she finished as the runner-up in the Division One Women's Sabre competition during  the first day of the 2025 Junior Olympics on Friday, Feb. 14.
Kovacs came into the elimination round as the No. 18 seed and proceeded to upset the No. 10 and the No. 2 seeded fencers in the competition before falling to a fellow ACC competitor from Notre Dame in the finals.
Freshman Mariasole Capellua also found success in the Queen City as she finished 33rd out of 280 competitors in the Junior Women's Epee division on Friday. Capellua followed up her stellar performance in the junior division with a top 25 finish in the Division One Women's epee as she took 23rd out of 219.
Gabriella Alfarache bounced back from a tough day on Friday as she finished 56th overall out of 291 fencers in the Junior Women's Sabre division.Â
In the largest field of the weekend, Peter Bruk finished 50th out of 351 fencers in the Junior Men's foil competition on Saturday.Â
