CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior Elden Wood was named the Men's Atlantic Coast Conference's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Thursday, May 1. Fencing had 21 student-athletes earn All-ACC Academic honors.
Wood is studying psychology and has a 3.86 GPA throughout his first three years at Carolina. The junior from New York has been named All-ACC Academic Team three times in his career and also has been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll, UNC Dean's List and Tar Heel Scholar-Athlete.
The junior is coming off a fantastic campaign that earned him his second trip to the national championship as well as All-America honors. Wood finished 11th in the country to help Carolina finish thirteenth overall. He also finished fifth at the regional championships.
Wood's successful season earned ACC Fencer of the Week honors for the week of January 20-25. Wood's performance helped Carolina earn three sweeps against Wagner, Haverford, and No. 5 Penn State, as he posted a 15-2 record at the Penn State Invitational. Wood notched five wins against No. 3 Columbia and No. 4 Princeton combined. The junior saberist beat Neil Lilov, the national runner-up, and also Jackson McBride, who finished 12th at the 2024 national championships.
