Bruk & Kovacs Medal At 2025 North American Cup

LOS ANGELES, CALIF -North Carolina fencing earned two medals on day one of the April North American Cup in men's foil and women's sabre.
Sophia Kovacs started the day strong as she wrapped up pool competition with a 5-1 record and the seventh-seeded heading into the direct elimination portion of Division 1 Women's Sabre. The senior earned a BYE into the round of 64, which pitted her against the 2024 National Champion, Maggie Shealy from Brandeis University, whom Kovacs beat 15-6. Kovacs followed that up by taking down Reya Ghayalod, who will fence at Cornell next year 15-12 in the elite eight round. Sophia Kovacs' day ended against Chloe Fox-Gitomer, an All-American from Princeton. Â
Peter Bruk, the freshman coming off of his first appearance at the National Championship, had a fantastic day in Junior Men's Foil. He battled through some challenges, going 4-2 in pools, earning the 14th seed for the D.E. section of the tournament. Bruk opened the round 128 by taking down Aaron Lui 15-7. The New Jersey native bested Biaya Tiya 15-10 in the round of 64. Bruk prevailed 15-14 in his closest bout of the day, taking down Kyle Chen in the round of 32. In order to advance to the semi-finals, Bruk had to take down Caleb Jeon, who did not have a blemish on record in the NAC until the freshman gave him his first loss of the day. The All-American Bruk's day ended against Castor Kao, the eventual champion and member of the Yale fencing team 15-9
