Fencing Takes Down Penn State, Wagner & Haverford

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – North Carolina fencing notched three sweeps on Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Penn State Invitational.
Carolina fencing picked up a sweep against Wagner University for its first win of Sunday. On the men's side, the sabre and epee weapon groups produced a 14-4 record to win 20-7. Epeeists Maximo Zafft and Eli Lippman both stayed undefeated against the Seahawks. Elden Wood continued his dominant junior season, picking up three wins, and Connor Woodward and Nicky Wind also picked up two more wins.
The women also had a great day, winning 15-12 against the Wagner Seahawks. Mariasole Capellua stayed undefeated to lead an epee squad that went 8-1, which helped Carolina win a close contest.
For the second time this season, Carolina has swept Haverford. The women's squad won 26-1 while posting a perfect record 18-0 with the sabre and epee squads, while Molly Kettelle highlighted the foil squad that went 8-1.
The men's foil squad picked up a perfect 9-0 record against Haverford, winning 25-2. Sabreist, Wood, and epeeists Zafft and Lippman posted their second undefeated round of the day.
Carolina ended the day with a sweep of the host team, Penn State. The women's team won 18-9. Ella Webb and Sophia Kovacs both went 2-1 in sabre. Foilist, Katie McGillion-Moore was perfect against the No. 13 team in the country. Tatiana Zafft and Anna Temiryaev went 6-0 to punctuate the victory.
Wood brought home his third perfect round of the weekend as sabre went 7-2 for the men's 16-11 victory over No. 5 Penn State.
