Fencing Takes Down Five Ranked Opponents In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA –North Carolina fencing picked up 10 victories during the Philadelphia Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Friday's Results
The women's squad dropped a close first dual to No. 11 Temple on Friday, Jan. 17, 15-12. The two-time All-American Sophia Kovacs led the sabre squad, posting an undefeated 3-0 record. Nicole Milewski and Katie McGillion-Moore both notched 2-1 records in the first duel of the afternoon.
The women's squad bounced back in incredible fashion, upsetting No. 4 Princeton 16-11, including a sweep 9-0 of the sabre. Gabriella Alfarache, Ella Webb, and Kovacs all posted perfect records.
The women's epee squad highlighted the 19-8 victory over No. 4 (Division III) John Hopkins. Tatiana Zafft posted three wins, while Anna Temiryaev and Mariasole Capellua remained perfect against JHU.
The men's squad opened with a win over No. 14. John Hopkins. Peter Bruk opened up 2025 with a 3-0 sweep in foil. Maximo Zafft swept the men's epee field, following his sister's perfect record against the Blue Jays. Epee went 7-2 to secure the ranked win.
Elden Wood and Finn Buchmann both bested their sabre competition 6-0 to give UNC a 16-11 victory over the No. 15 University of California San Diego Tritons. Bruk, the foilist, also earned another perfect match against the Tritons.

Saturday's Results
Saturday morning opened with a close loss against No. 11 New York University 14-13 as Buchman, Wood, and Mika Casper individually went 2-1 in sabre.
Carolina responded to the NYU defeat with three straight sweeps. The team kicked off the victories with a win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The men won 20-7, and the women won 26-1 with two perfect sweeps by sabre and epee.
Fencing followed up the ranked win with another as women's foil swept Sacred Heart. Women's foil went undefeated, making it the third sweep by a weapon's group in as many matches to start the day.
The final win of the weekend came against Haverford. The women's team had a perfect win, 27-0, sweeping every weapon group. The men followed up the win with another one, 20-7.
