Fencing Closes Out Fall Schedule

PHILADELPHIA – North Carolina fencing earned two ranked wins against Penn State and Yale on the first day of the Elite Invitational. The women's squad followed up with a victory against Air Force on Sunday.
Saturday's Results
Fencing started its first multi-team road test of the season perfectly. Both squads picked up multiple ranked wins as they swept Penn State, Yale, and Cleveland State on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Both teams defeated Cleveland State 23-4. The women's epee squad posted a clean slate, going 9-0 against the Vikings. The men's team followed suit, notching a 9-0 start in foil.
The ranked matches against Penn State and Yale were much closer, as Carolina beat Yale 14-13. Both epee squads posted identical marks of 6-3 against the Bulldogs, while the Zaft siblings went 3-0.
The win against Penn State was highlighted by another perfect mark by Maximo Zaft as the men's epee went 7-2 for the upset victory 16-11.
Sunday's Results
The women's team closed the fall season with a big win against Air Force 20-7. The entire foil squad stayed perfect going 9-0. Anna Temiryaev and Iman Tucker both posted a 3-0 record in epee and sabre.
The Men's team battled, nearly pulling off the upset against No. 3 Columbia 15-12.

The Tar Heels return to Philadelphia, Pa. for the Philly Invitational on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18.
