Gerard, Ford and Fountain Shoot in the 60s in Final Round
Ryan Gerard, David Ford and Peter Fountain each shot in the 60s in the third and final round of the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate Saturday at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
Â
The fifth-ranked Tar Heels moved up one spot over the final 18 holes to finish the tournament in fifth place at 12-under-par 840. Carolina shot the fourth-best round today with a 9-under 275, which was seven strokes better than either of its rounds on Friday (282-283).
Â
Top-ranked Oklahoma shot 14-under 270 today and won the Thunderbird at 31-under 821, five strokes better than tournament host and fourth-ranked Arizona State. No. 7 Texas Tech was third (-22), No. 2 Oklahoma State finished fourth (-16) and the Tar Heels were fifth (-12).
"It's always an adjustment for us to play desert golf in Phoenix, which is why we play in Arizona State's tournament, especially with nationals in the desert next month," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "We played much better today. Now we can't wait for the ACC Championship and then the NCAA Tournament. This is the best and most fun time of the year."
Â
Gerard made six birdies today to shoot 69, his second consecutive round in the 60s. He shot 67 Friday in the second round, the low round by a Tar Heel in the tournament. It was the fourth time this season the fifth-year senior from Raleigh shot two of three rounds in a tournament in the 60s.
Â
Freshman David Ford shot a 3-under 68 today, making four birdies and only one bogey. He tied for 22nd place at 1-under 212, the sixth time in nine starts this season he finished a tournament under par.
Â
Sophomore Peter Fountain shot 69 today, including a 4-under-par 31 on the back nine. He also tied for 22nd at 1-under 212. It was his best finish in five tournaments and his 69 matched his low round of the season.
Â
