May 18, 2026 | Men's Golf
North Carolina's Carson Bertagnole shot an opening-round 67 to lead the Tar Heels to second place in the NCAA Men's Golf Bryan Regional at The Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
Carolina, the No. 2 seed in the 14-team field, shot 10-under-par 278, two strokes behind Texas A&M, the No. 5 seed which is playing on its home course.
Bertagnole, a freshman from Pinehurst, N.C., opened with a bogey but made seven birdies over the next 12 holes to vault to the top of the leader board. The Aggies' Wheaton Ennis eventually took the 18-hole lead with a 6-under 66 with Bertagnole and Texas' Luke Potter tied for second a stroke behind.
UNC's Andrew Riley and Grant Roscich are tied for 10th after shooting 70s, Sihan Sandhu opened with a 1-under 71 and Keaton Vo shot even par.
The Tar Heels played round one without Niall Sheils Donegan, who leads the team in scoring average, due to a medical issue. He is day-to-day. Teams are allowed to sub players prior to the next two rounds.
The Aggies lead at 12-under 276. Carolina (10-under 278) is in second, TCU is third at -8, Texas is fourth at -7, Tennessee is fifth at -6, Chattanooga is sixth at -2 and Colorado is seventh at 1 under.
The top five teams after Wednesday's third round advance to the NCAA Championship May 29 in Carlsbad, Calif.
Bertagnole's 67 is the lowest round by a UNC freshman in an NCAA regional since 2021, when Peter Fountain shot a final-round 67 in the Noblesville (Ind.) Regional.
