Men's Golf With 10-Shot Lead At ACC Championship

Fountain Gerard Tied for 36-Hole Lead
Defending champion Peter Fountain and fifth-year senior Ryan Gerard, both from Raleigh, are tied for the individual lead at 9 under par and the University of North Carolina has a 10-shot lead after 36 holes at the 2022 ACC Men's Golf Championship Friday at Shark's Tooth Golf Course at the Watersound Club in Panama City Beach, Fla.
The Tar Heels are 29 under par after rounds of 269 and 278 for a 547 total. Georgia Tech is second at 19 under, Virginia is 14 under and Florida State and Notre Dame are tied for fourth at 11 under.
The top four teams after Saturday's third and final round of stroke play advance to the semifinals on Sunday.
Fountain and Gerard are tied with Clemson's Jacob Bridgeman at 9-under 135. Fountain, who won the 2021 ACC title with a 10-under-par 200, shot a season-best 68 in the morning, then bettered that with a 5-under 67 in the afternoon. Fountain was 1 over through his first nine in the opening round, then made three birdies, an eagle and no bogeys for a 31 on the homeward nine. In the second round, Fountain made seven more birdies en route to his season-best 67.
Gerard made five birdies and an eagle in shooting 67 in the first round, then added five birdies against just one bogey for a 68 in the afternoon.
In the first round, five Tar Heels shot in the 60s for the first time in a round in school history in an ACC Championship. That included 66 by David Ford, 67 by Gerard and 68s by Ryan Burnett, Fountain and Austin Greaser.
Carolina's 19-under-par first round was UNC's second-lowest stroke total in an ACC Championship round and 19 under par was the best ever by the Tar Heels in ACC Championship history. It was the third-best score to par by any team in ACC Championship history.
UNC's previous best score to par in ACC play was 15 under last year in the second round when the Tar Heels shot 265, the lowest stroke total in any round in league championship history (that was on a par 70 course).
Friday's 269 first-round total tied the third-best round in Carolina history and 19 under equaled the second-lowest in school history for a round in any tournament.
Burnett (68-70) is tied for seventh at 6-under 138, Ford (66-73) is tied for 10th at 5-under 139 and Greaser (68-78) is tied for 39th at 2-over 146.
