
Gymnastics Set to Compete in Conference Championships on Saturday

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina women's gymnastics team will travel to Pitt for the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships on Saturday. The competition is separated into two separate sessions, and the Tar Heels are slated to compete in the first meet at 1 p.m.
Following regular season competition, the Tar Heels were seeded fifth in the EAGL Conference going into the Championships. After posting its highest score of the 2021 season with a total of 196.150 last Saturday, the Tar Heels finished the season with an average score team score of 195.297.
The North Carolina women's gymnastics team finished the season with a record of 11-2 (9-2 EAGL).
"We've had a great week of practice, said interim Head Coach Marie Denick. "We're coming off of a great competition last Saturday, scoring our season high with a 196.150 and a lot of people hitting career highs. Overall just a fantastic meet. Really going into the last few weeks of practice we've been focusing on being intentional and maximizing every turn. We've been doing a lot more routines under pressure, so they're getting used to going aggressive and being very exact so they can trust that in a competition."
LAST WEEK
In a night where North Carolina's Lily Dean was honored as part of senior night, UNC rolled William & Mary 196.150-190.800 inside Carmichael Arena.
North Carolina's final tally of 196.150 was Carolina's highest final score since 196.325 on Feb. 28, 2020 in a win over George Washington.
UNC turned in an impressive performance on the vault for the first rotation and led 49.150-46.675. Hallie Thompson and Drew Aldridge led the squad with a scores of 9.875. Emery Summey turned in a 9.825, while Elizabeth Culton posted a 9.800 and Brianna Greenlow a 9.775.
The Tar Heels moved to the uneven bars for the second rotation. Culton led North Carolina with a 9.850, while Greenlow turned in a 9.800, Kate Greene a 9.750, Summey a 9.700, and Jamie Shearer a 9.675. Carolina led 97.925-95.000 halfway through the meet.
Culton posted an impressive 9.950 on the beam, Carolina's third rotation of the evening, while Thompson recorded a 9.800. Summey, Greenlow, and Shearer each posted a score of 9.775 to round out the Tar Heels' rotation. The Tar Heels represented the top-five scores in the event between both programs.
Going into the fourth rotation, floor exercise, North Carolina claimed a 147.000-143.500 lead.
North Carolina dominated the fourth rotation and recorded the top-five scores on the floor. Culton led the Heels with a 9.900 while Julianna Weil ended with a. 9.825. Greenlow was the Tar Heels' third place finisher, while Greene and Dean each posted a score of 9.800.
THE OPPONENTS
After dropping only two EAGL competitions this season, both to North Carolina State, UNC enters the EAGL Championships with wins over the other seven teams in the competition throughout the 2021 regular season.
"We're really excited to be starting on floor," said Denick. "It's really turned out to be a good event we've been progressing on well. We've been progressing on vault, and we've had a great season on bars and beam so we're really looking forward to a great meet with a lot of high energy."
