Carolina Travels to Kent State for Quad Meet

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Carolina Gymnastics continues its 2019 season on the road this Sunday in Kent, Ohio at a quad meet against Kent State, Rutgers and Ball State. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. at Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center on the campus of Kent State.
"Its been a busy week for our student-athletes with midterm exams and papers," said North Carolina Head Coach Derek Galvin. "Training has been going well. the team seems eager to travel… This is going to be a very competitive meet. I think any of the four teams are able to come away with the top of score of the meet. We are excited to get out there."
North Carolina comes into the meet ranked 43rd in the national standings. With a national qualifying score of 194.615, Carolina sits in fifth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. The Tar Heels continue to lead the EAGL on vault and floor, ranking nationally in the top 30 on both events. On floor, Carolina is 28th with an NQS of 49.060 and 22nd on vault with an NQS of 48.970.

"I'm pleased with the fact that it was our highest away meet score thus far this season," said North Carolina Head Coach Derek Galvin. "We are getting better at competing on the road and that is the key. We want to make each venue that we compete in feel like we are home in our arena."
Carolina began the day with its highest score on bars in an away meet, 48.675. Rylie Dewhurst matched her season high and Grace Donaghy set hers to led the Tar Heels with scores of 9.825 and 9.800, respectively. Dewhurst placed first while Donaghy tied for second. Emery Summey set a career high on bars with a 9.725 and tied for fifth place.
"Bars has been a challenging event for us on the road," commented Galvin. "They [the team] shook that off. It was good to see the team come away with five solid routines."
The Tar Heel vault squad continued its top-notch season with a 48.975, continuing its streak of six consecutive weeks scoring above 48.950. Khazia Hislop placed first in the event with a 9.875, followed closely by teammate Mikayla Robinson in second with a 9.850. Madison Hargrave tied for third with a 9.800. Drew Aldridge and Alexis Allen placed seventh and ninth with scores of 9.750 and 9.700, respectively.
With a 49.125, Carolina scored its third highest score on floor this season. Hislop matched her career high of 9.950 and placed first for the second consecutive week. Hargrave matched her career high as well, placing second with a 9.875. Teammates Lily Dean and Robinson scored 9.825 and tied for third place.
Carolina finished the meet on beam. The Tar Heels placed four of the top five in the event, led by Jamie DeCicco tying for first with a 9.850. Alexis Allen places third with a 9.825, followed by Hislop in fourth with a 9.800. Dean rounded out the top-five Heels with a 9.750 in fifth.
"We wanted our team to have fun this weekend," said Galvin. "We also asked them to be intentional in warmups, routines, the whole day, and it showed."

The Tar Heels are more familiar with the Cardinals from Ball State. The Cardinals are coming off their best score of the season with a 195.625 last week against Central Michigan. Ball State checks in at 46th in the standings with a NQS of 194.395. The Cardinals strongest event is on vault as they are ranked 26th in the nation on the event and hold a NQS of 48.925.
"We have not competed against Kent State in a couple years," commented Galvin. "We are more familiar with Ball State, having already competed against them this year. Kent State and Ball State are both coming on strong towards the end of the year. I think they are hitting their stride."
Rutgers will be coming off short rest with a meet Friday, March 8 before the meet on Sunday, March 10. The Scarlet Knights are ranked 45th in the national standings with a NQS of 194.460, just two spots behind the Tar Heels. Rutgers best event is floor with a NQS of 48.915 and a national ranking of 39.
"Rutgers is under a new head coach, Umme Salim-Beasley," said Galvin. "She has done a great job with their program and I expect them to come out ready to compete."

THE OPPONENTS:
Kent State is having a great season with a 11-5 record and a NQS of 195.270. It is currently ranked 32nd in the nation and atop of the MAC Conference. Over the last four meets, the Golden Flashes have scored above 195.500 as a team. Statistically, balance beam is their best event, ranked 26th in the country with a NQS of 48.900.The Tar Heels are more familiar with the Cardinals from Ball State. The Cardinals are coming off their best score of the season with a 195.625 last week against Central Michigan. Ball State checks in at 46th in the standings with a NQS of 194.395.
