
Tar Heels Remain in Eighth Place after Second Round in ACC Championship

New London, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team capitalized on the improved weather conditions in the second round of the 58th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, carding a one-under 287 total to remain in eighth place. Michael McGowan and Sean Jacklin paced the Tar Heels, both firing under-par rounds to move into the top-10 individually.
McGowan, a sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C., and Jacklin,a freshman from Bradenton, Fla., fired identical two-under 70 totals to moveinto a tie for eighth place. Junior Matt Raudenbush, from Pine Valley, N.J., bounced back from a three-over 75 in the first round to fire an even-par 72 and is tied for 29th place. Senior Henry Zaytoun III, from Raleigh,N.C., and sophomore Clark Palmer from Augusta, Ga., struggled again to get on track in day two, each carding a three-over 75 and are tied for 40thplace.
Carolina head coach, John Inman, was encouraged by his team's improvement in the second round but was disappointed that they were unable to move up the leader board. "Unfortunately, we did not take advantage of another good start," said Inman. "But we shot under par, so that is something to build on for tomorrow."
Georgia Tech fired a blazing 10-under 278, giving them a17-under 559 total and extending their lead over the field to nine strokes. Duke University is in second place after two rounds with an eight-under 568 total. Clemson carded a six-under 282 to move into third place with a four-under 572 total.
Georgia Tech's Paul Haley carded a dazzling four-under 68for the second consecutive day and leads the individual competition with an eight-under 136 total. Rambling Wreck teammate, Tyler Scott, as well as Corbin Mills of Clemson and John Varolof Wake Forest are all tied for second with a 5-under 139 total heading into the final round.
Duke still holds the advantage over the Tar Heels as each school looks to secure one point in the Battle of the Blues competition, sponsored by Continental Tire. One point will be rewarded to the team with the higher finish in the ACC Championship. Carolina currently leads the overall competition, 12-10, entering this weekend's action. In addition to men's golf this weekend, one point will alsobe rewarded in rowing, one point will be rewarded in men's track and field andone point in women's track and field.
