Tar Heels Tie for Eighth Place in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship

New London, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team carded a seven-over-par 295 in the final round to tie finish tied for eight place in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship with a 15-over 879 total. Michael McGowan led the Tar Heels, placing in the top-10 overall.
McGowan tied for 10th place after firing a one-under 71 in the third round, finishing with a two-under 214 total for the tournament. The sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C., registered a tournament-best 15 birdies over three rounds. Henry Zaytoun III placed 29th with a five-over 221 total. The senior from Raleigh, N.C., finished his final conference championship strong, tallying six birdies en route to a two-under 70 in the third round. Sean Jacklin, a freshman from Bradenton, Fla., finished tied for 33rd with a seven-over 223 and junior Matt Raudenbush, from Pine Valley, N.J., tallied an eight-over 224, tying for 39th place. Sophomore Clark Palmer, from Augusta, Ga., finished tied for 46th with a 12-over 228 total.
The Tar Heels started strong out of the gate on day three, climbing as high as sixth place on the team leaderboard, but were unable to keep it going on the back-nine.
"Again, we just failed to capitalize on another good start," said Carolina head coach John Inman. "The conditions were more difficult today. The middle of the golf course just got to them today. I'm still proud of them. They fought to the very end."
Georgia Tech continued its dominance over the field, tallying a blistering 33-under 831 total to run away with the 2011 ACC Championship team title. The Rambling Wreck was one of three teams, along with Duke and Virginia Tech, to finish under-par on the final day, firing a tournament-best 16-under 272. Duke finished in runner-up with a 13-under 851 total. Clemson was the only other school to finish under-par for the championship, carding a three-under 861 total to finish third.
By finishing ahead of North Carolina in the ACC Championship, Duke secured one point in the Battle of the Blues competition sponsored by Continental Tire. The Tar Heels lead the overall competition, 14-12.
Paul Haley of Georgia Tech captured the individual title, assembling a 10-under 206 for the championship. Haley fired a two-under 70 on day three to seal the wire-to-wire victory. Teammate Kyle Scott came in second with a nine-under 207 while J.T. Griffin, also of Georgia Tech, tied for third with Duke's Julian Suri. Griffin fired a tournament-low six-under 66 in the final round to tie Suri with a seven-under 209 total for the tournament.
The 58th annual men's golf ACC Championship was played at the Old North State Club, which features a par-72, 7,102-yard layout.
