
Tar Heels in Eighth Place after First Round of the ACC Championship

New London, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team carded a nine-over-par 297 and are in eighth place after the first round of the 58th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Michael McGowan and Sean Jacklin paced the Tar Heels, both placing in the top-15 after the opening round.
McGowan, a sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C., and Jacklin,a freshman from Bradenton, Fla., each fired a one-over 73 to finish tied for 14th. Junior Matt Raudenbush, from Pine Valley, N.J., carded a 3-over 75 and tied for 27th place in his second consecutive start of the spring season. Senior Henry Zaytoun III and sophomore Clark Palmer, from Augusta, Ga.,both finished with a 4-over 76 in round one and tied for 35th.
Georgia Tech fired a blazing seven-under 281 total to take a commanding eight-stroke lead after one round. The Rambling Wreck is the only team to finish under par after the first round. Duke currently sits in second place after carding a one-over 289, followed closely by Wake Forest, which carded a 2-over 290.
Paul Haley and Kyle Scott of Georgia Tech took the early lead in the individual competition after both fired a 4-under 68, tying for first place. Duke's Yaroslav Merkulov and John Varol of Wake Forest sit one stroke behind at 3-under.
Duke has the early advantage over the Tar Heels as they each look to capture another point in the annual Battle of the Blues competition,sponsored by Continental Tire. One point will be awarded to the team with the higher finish in the ACC Championship. Carolina currently leads the Blue Devils, 12-10, entering this weekend's action. In addition to men's golf this weekend,one point will also be awarded in rowing, one in men's track and field and onein women's track and field. The second round will begin Saturday, April 23 at 8 a.m. The 54-hole event is being played atthe Old North State Club, which features a par-72, 7,102-yard layout. Live scoring is available throughoutthe tournament at golfstat.com
