
Carolina Tied With Duke At Seventh Place After First Round Of ACC Play

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Men's golf team finished the first round of the ACC Men's Golf Championship tied for seventh place with Duke University. The Tar Heels shot a team total two-above-par 290.
"We need to have a good round tomorrow," says Tar Heel head coach John Inman. "The course wasn't playing that easy. We just need to put a good score on the board to put us in position for Sunday."
Sophomore Kevin O'Connell leads the team with a one-under-par 71.O'Connell finished as one of eight in a tie for ninth place. Junior Chase MacFarland and senior Robert Riesen shot par 72 scores and are among seven tied for 17th place. Freshman Jack Fields shot a three-over-par 75, finishing the day tied at 36th followed closely by his sophomore teammate Henry Zaytoun III who shot a four-over-par 76. Zaytoun also finished the day in a tie at 42nd.
Georgia Tech leads the first round of play with seven-under-par team total of 281. North Carolina State trails by one with a score of 282. Clemson is currently in third place with a two-under-par team total of 286.
Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale and Virginia Tech's Drew Weaver are tied for first with five-under-par scores of 67. Matt Hill of North Carolina State finished a solid third with a four-under-par score of 68. Kyle Stanley of Clemson and Brendan Tracy of the University of Maryland tied at fourth place with three-under-par scores of 69.
The tournament will continue Saturday April 18th and Sunday April 19th at Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The course features a 72-par, 7102 yard layout.
One Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to either Carolina or Duke, whichever finishes higher, in the ACC Championship. The Carlyle Cup is a competition between the two schools. Carolina currently leads Duke 11.5-8.5 going into this weekend's competitions (men's and women's golf, men's and women's track, women's lacrosse and women's rowing).
