NEW LONDON, North Carolina - The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished the second round of the ACC Championship on Saturday with a three-over 579 total to maintain their seventh place tie overall.
Georgia Tech leads the tournament with an 11-under 565.
Junior Chase MacFarland finished the day two-under par, giving him a two round total of 142. The Savannah, Ga., native carded six birdies, the second time this season he has fired more than five (seven in the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational). MacFarland jumped from a tie for 17th to a tie for eighth place.
Freshman Jack Fields, from Southern Pines, N.C., shot even for the day placing him in a tie for 29th in the tournament thus far with a 147 total. Senior Robert Riesen birdied his final hole of the round to put him at even par on the day and tied for 13th place.
Sophomore Henry Zaytoun III finished four over par on the day. Zaytoun, a Raleigh, N.C., native, is tied for 49th after the second round with a 152 total. Fellow sophomore Kevin O'Connell, of Cary, N.C., shot an unfortunate and uncharacteristic triple bogey on the ninth hole, but then birdied his 18th hole to finish three over for the second day.
O'Connell is tied for 22nd with a 146 total so far.
The ACC Championship will continue play through Sunday at the host site Old North State Club. The par-72 course features a 7,102 layout.
One Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to either Carolina or Duke, whichever finishes higher, in the ACC Championship. After day two, the Tar Heels are five strokes behind the Blue Devils. The Carlyle Cup is a competition between the two schools. Carolina currently leads Duke 11.5-8.5 going into this weekend's competition (men's and women's golf, men's and women's track, women's lacrosse and women's rowing all have events this weekend).
