HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The 12th-ranked North Carolina men's lacrosse team got three goals and one assist from freshman attackman Mike McCall but it wasn't enough to overcome a 6-1 scoring run by sixth-ranked Hofstra as the Pride defeated the Tar Heels 12-7 in men's lacrosse action at Hofstra Stadium on Wednesday night.
The win was the ninth in a row for the Pride which closes its regular season at 11-3. The Tar Heels fell to 8-5 with the loss. Carolina hung tough with the veteran Pride, who start six seniors as compared to one senior in the starting lineup for the Tar Heels. The Heels held one-goal leads at four times during the first three quarters until Hofstra exploded for the first six goals of the fourth quarter. Scott Dooley powered the Pride in the final period as he scored three goals and had one assist on the six Hofstra goals in the final period.
Hofstra outshot the Tar Heels 48-22 but freshman goalkeeper Paul Spellman was brilliant for the Tar Heels as he made 17 saves, just one short of his career high of 18 set earlier this season against Johns Hopkins. Offensively besides McCall, UNC got a goal and two assists from freshman attackman Jed Prossner and two assists each from freshman midfielder Bryant Will and junior midfielder Austin Garrison. Carolina's other goals were by senior midfielder Pat Jackson, sophomore attackman Andrew Lucas and senior attackman Steve Perdue. UNC stayed in the game in the first half by winning 11 of the 12 faceoffs in the first half while Spellman was making eight saves in the first 30 minutes. The first half ended 5-5 as McCall's third goal of the opening two periods tied the game at 5-5 with 58 seconds left in the first half.
The Tar Heels took their final lead of the game on Prossner's goal, assisted by Garrison, with 12:31 remaining in the third quarter. Kevin Dougherty, who had three goals for the Pride, tied the game before the end of the third quarter and then Hofstra exploded for three goals in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 9-6 lead. Steve McTigue, who had one goal and three assists in the game, had the first goal in the run and then Dooley had back-to-back goals to make it 9-6 with 12 minutes left in the contest. Hofstra dominated the game statistically in the second half as the Pride outshot the Tar Heels 24-9 after halftime and won 10 of the 12 faceoffs after halftime.
Dooley finished with three goals and one assist for Hofstra while McTigue had one goal and three assists and Dougherty had three goals. The Pride benefitted from the penalty situation as UNC was whistled for nine fouls as compared to only three for the Pride.
