CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the pool Saturday afternoon in a successful fashion, sweeping the Clemson Tigers in dual-meet action at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heels, who had not competed since November 20, were dominant in the women's meet and the men won a tough battle against a previously undefeated Clemson side.
North Carolina beat Clemson in the women's meet by a score of 150-93, while the men's meet score was 142-101 in favor of Coach Frank Comfort's Tar Heels.
Sophomore Katie Hathaway was the swimmer of the meet as she captured three individual event titles, while junior Lauren Silva won two events for the Tar Heel women. Silva, a transfer from SMU swimming her first meet for the Heels, captured the 1000-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley. Her time of 10:06.60 in the 1000 free was a season best time for UNC. Hathaway won both the 100 and 200 yard freestyles. Her time of 51.67 was a season best time in that event for Carolina.
On the men's side, junior tri-captain Brad Kline came up big for the Tar Heels, winning both the 200 and 500 yard freestyles. His time of 1:41.06 was the best time this season by a Tar Heel in the 200 free. The other double winner for UNC was sophomore Chris Helin, who captured both the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard breaststroke.
The 17th-ranked North Carolina women improved to 5-1 overall on the season with the win over Clemson. The Tar Heel women are now 2-0 in dual meet action. The 20th-ranked North Carolina men topped the .500 mark for the first time this season and stand at 3-2 overall. The Heels are 2-0 in ACC action.
Clemson's men saw their undefeated season ruined as the Tigers fell to 3-1 overll and 1-1 in the conference. The Tigers' women's team, which beat Carolina a year ago in Clemson, is now 3-3 overallo and 0-2 in the ACC.
The North Carolina men have now beaten Clemson 38 times in 42 dual meets during the series history. The UNC women improved their series lead over the Tigers to 17-5. The Tar Heel swimmers will be in action again this coming Wednesday afternoon when they play host to Kenyon College in dual-meet action at Koury Natatorium. Admission to the meet, which will start at 3:00 p.m., is free.
