General: A promising three-time returning letter-winner...improved greatly as a junior with career best times in the 100 back and 200 IM…swam at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club for Coach Pat Hogan...a backstroker and individual medleyist...junior national finalist in the 100 and 200 backstrokes and the 200 and 400 IMs...was member of a MAC team which won men's and overall team junior national titles in the summer of 1996...MAC team record holder in 100-yard and meter backstroke for 15-16 age group...previously lived in New Jersey where he set 25 records for the Eastern Express Swim Team...also holds six New Jersey state records and five Eastern zone records…a top student-athlete at Carolina...cumulative GPA of 3.51

Summer 2001: Competed at the USS Southern Sectional in Athens, Ga. where he placed 20th in the 200 back and 24th in the 100 back.
2000-2001: Missed the bulk of the competitive season due to a bout with mononucleosis…still swam well for Carolina at the ACC Championships…a Dean’s List student in spring semester 2001…he garnered Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll kudos.
1999-2000: At the 1999 Nike Cup, he led off UNC’s 400 medley relay which placed third...also finished ninth in the 100 back…at the 2000 ACC Championships, he finished 19th in the 100 back (52.01), a lifetime best…2000 ACC Academic Honor Roll selection…Dean’s List student. Prep: Graduated on June 3, 1999 from Providence Senior High School...swam there for four years, specializing in the 50 free, 200 IM, 100 back and 500 free...Phil Hughston Award nominee...Wendy's High School Heisman nominee from Providence Senior High School...team captain and MVP in 1999 at PSHS...coaches award winner in 1998...also attended the Charlotte Latin School where he was team MVP in 1996...holds Providence school record in 100 back and Latin School record in 200 IM and 100 back...Scholastic All-America selection in 1997, 1998 and 1999...National Honor Society member in 1998, 1999...member of Providence’s elite chamber choir his senior year…sports editor of the school newspaper, The Prowl.
Personal: Given name is Hal Brantley Wansley...nicknames include "Alf" and “Haldog”...has one sister...is the son of Brant and Lynn Wansley...his father participated in track and field at UNC...was a javelin thrower who graduated in 1968...was born September 11, 1980 in St. Louis, Mo....climbed in the Swiss Alps last summer...hobbies include schooling teammate Steve Mohr on his own Green Bay Packers, watching movies and “quoting”, listening to the very best in classic rock, mixing CD’s including classic 80s and immersing himself in sports...says he would like to test his luck on ESPN’s 2-minute drill…athletes he most admires are Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, Julius Peppers, his mom, his dad, and his sister....biggest sports thrills were winning back-to-back swimming titles at Providence High School, the first of which was with former two-time Tar Heel captain Brad Kline, and both of them were with another current teammate, Jimmy Owens…also cites UNC’s 41-9 victory over Florida State in football and attending the UNC-Duke basketball game his freshman year as other thrills, but says his biggest thrill is being a student-athlete at UNC...UNC swimming’s inaugural fantasy baseball and football team champion…business administration major...banking and consulting are career plans.
