Men's Lacrosse Tops Butler, 12-11

DURHAM, N.C. - The ninth-ranked University of North Carolina men*s lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the season with a close 12-11 defeat of #17 Butler (0-2) on Sun day. Senior midfielder Brett Kohart led the Tar Heels with three assists and three goals, junior attackman Matt Crofton finished with two goals and two assists in the game. On the Butler side, junior attackman Chris Vosburgh had two goals and one assist.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first quarter led by Carey who had both of his goals and an assist in the first. The second quarter was quiet on the scoring front as sophomore attackman Jeff Sonke added a goal and Butler junior midfielder Mike Regan added two goals to tighten the score to 7-3 at the half.
The Bulldogs owned much of the third quarter scoring five consecutive goals to tie the game at eight a piece. However a flurry of three late goals by the Tar Heels Brett Kohart, Justin Bowman and Crofton gave the Heels a three goal pad heading into the fourth. Butler would not go away in the fourth fighting to an 11-11 tie with the Heels with just under five minutes remaining. But a goal with four minutes left by Sonke sealed the 12-11 victory for Carolina.
Carolina's goalkeepers Jarron Harkness and Kric Blindenbacher combined for 16 saves in the game.
The Tar Heels travel to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
