Men's Lacrosse Falls to No. 14 Navy

ANNAPOLIS, M.D. - Fourteenth-ranked Navy jumped out to a 6-1 lead midway through the third quarter Saturday afternoon and held on to defeat ninth-ranked North Carolina 8-6 in men's lacrosse action at Rip Miller Field. The win by the Midshipmen broke a two-game winning streak by the Tar Heels as Carolina fell to 2-1 on the season. The Midshipmen evened their record at 1-1 with the win over UNC.
The Navy effort was led by senior team captain J.L. Reppert who scored three goals in the first 19:58 of the game to stake the Middies to a 5-1 halftime lead. After Carolina twice cut the Navy lead to two goals in the second half, Reppert scored an insurance goals for the Mids with 9:09 to play in the game to give Navy an 8-5 lead. That goal essentially iced the game.
Also stellar for Navy was goalkeeper Mickey Jarboe who faced 39 total UNC shots, 31 of them on goal. He saved 25 of those 31 shots, allowing only six goals including a meaningless tally by Jeff Sonke with only four seconds left that cut the final margin to 8-6.
Offensively, Sonke led the Tar Heels with three goals. Midfielders Brett Kohart, Ryan Beard and Justin Bowman each added one goal for UNC. Tar Heel senior goalie Jarron Harkness had an admirable effort, making 14 saves and allowing only eight goals.
Two telling statistics in the game saw the Midshipmen win the ground ball battle from UNC by a decisive 42-30 margin. Carolina was also hurt when it was able to convert on only one of 10 extra-man opportunities.
Carolina will return home to Chapel Hill to play 25th-ranked Pennsylvania this coming Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Navy Field with a chance to regroup and get back in the win column with three days. The Tar Heels will then head to Colorado to play next weekend at Air Force and Denver.
