Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team swept a doubleheader from Temple Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, 18-5 and 8-1, completing a three-game sweep of the Owls this weekend.
With the wins, Carolina improved to 10-0 on the season. Carolina is off to the best start in the program*s history, surpassing 9-0 starts in both 1942 and 1934. Temple fell to 0-3 on the year.
In the first game, Corey Richardson (3-0) was perfect through 5.0 innings and struck out seven to pick up the win. Richardson allowed three runs, one earned, and walked just one. Greg Powell (0-1) allowed eight earned runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.
The Tar Heels scored four runs in the third, one in the fourth, three in the sixth, three in the seventh and seven in the eighth on their way to the blowout win. Clay Hooper went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI for the Tar Heels. Chris LaMarsh also went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Tyrell Godwin went 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI. Wes Reynolds and Bart Walker each drove in three for Carolina.
In the second game, Ryan Snare (1-0) got his first win of the year, pitching 6.0 innings of four-hit, shutout ball. Snare struck out six and walked one. The Carolina pitching staff has compiled an ERA of 2.00 this season, striking out 91 batters while allowing just 73 hits in 90.0 innings.
Chris Maples hit a two-run home run, the first of his collegiate career, in the second game, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. LaMarsh went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the second contest, while Ryan Earey also had two hits.
Carolina continues its 1999 season Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Liberty at 3:00 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
