Baseball Comes Up One Game Short Of A Sweep, Loses, 5-2, To Georgia Tech Sunday
April 19, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A bottom-of-the-ninth rally never fully came together, and Carolina baseball fell short of sweep with a 5-2 loss to No. 2 Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 3 Tar Heels (33-7-1, 15-6 ACC) once again got excellent pitching from a staff whose ACC leading ERA improved over the weekend against the highest scoring team in the nation. Coming into this weekend, Georgia Tech had not been held to five or fewer runs in back-to-back games this season. Carolina's arms kept them under that number all three games.
Â
UNC's staff combined for 10 strikeouts and four earned runs across the nine innings on the final day against the Yellow Jackets.
Â
Today Carolina's bullpen kept the game close as the UNC offense struggled to find its footing. Matthew Matthijs, Jackson Rose, and Camron Seagraves gave up just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Â
After a 14-run outpouring of offense to secure the series on Saturday, the Heels were a little slower at the plate on Sunday. Things started well, as the red-hot Owen Hull laced a double to left-center to bring Jake Schaffner around from first to score UNC's first run of the game.
Â
Schaffner went 3-for-5 on the day, scoring both of Carolina's runs. He was sensational all weekend, finishing with a .600 average and five runs in the marquee matchup. He reached safely in the leadoff at-bat of all three games.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, Carter French and Schaffner started the inning with leadoff singles to put the tying run at the plate and put some last ditch pressure on the Yellow Jackets. Unfortunately for Carolina a strikeout, a good defensive play, and a deep fly out ended the rally and the game.
Â
The Tar Heels will return to Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday for another midweek matchup, this time against High Point for MPS Awareness Day. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. ET with coverage on ACCNX.
