Baseball Uses Big Fourth Inning To Beat High Point, 9-2
April 21, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina baseball used a patient approach to take a 9-2 win over High Point on Tuesday night in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 2 Tar Heels (34-7-1) put most of their runners on base the free way with 10 walks and three HBPs. Of the nine runs UNC scored, five reached on a free pass.
Â
Carolina's scoring on the day came in bunches. The first grouping was in their half of the second where they scored three runs on a sequence of walk, walk, walk, wild pitch, walk, fielder's choice RBI, and wild pitch produced the offense.
Â
The biggest pop came in the fourth, sparked by a two-out bases-clearing double for the pinch-hitting Colin Hynek. A tailing ball down the right field line dropped in for his 14th two-bagger of the season.
Â
The double was followed in the next two batters by a single from Erik Paulsen that brought Hynek around to score and a two-run homer by Cooper Nicholson to make it six runs in the frame. It was the 10th long ball of the season for Tar Heel third baseman who is the first on the team to reach the double-digit marker.
Â
Senior veteran Carter French produced the final flourish on the night with a spectacular diving catch in foul territory for the first out of the
Â
On the mound, head coach Scott Forbes relied on a platoon of seven different arms as the team prepares for the series ahead against Duke. Jackson Rose got the start for the third straight midweek, giving up one hit and one run in his 2.1 IP.
Â
Freshman phenom Caden Glauber followed him and picked up the win with an effective if not still eventful 1.2 innings, punching out three to move to 5-0 on the year. His 1.74 ERA on the season leads all qualified pitchers in the ACC.
The Carolina Arm Barn, hailed as one of the deepest units in the nation, showed off its diversity of talent with five more players taking the mound after Glauber to combine for 5.0 IP, five Ks, one hit, and one run (unearned).
Â
The Tar Heels will turn around on Thursday night for a quick road trip across town to Durham where they will take on rivals Duke in the third to last weekend series of the regular season. The first game of the showdown will start at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
