Women’s Lacrosse Extends Winning Streak After Topping Virginia, 20-8

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three players recorded a hat trick and No. 2 North Carolina women's lacrosse allowed just one goal in the second half to secure a decisive 20-8 victory over No. 14 Virginia in a top-15 Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
Following the win, the Tar Heels remain unbeaten and improve to 7-0 (3-0 ACC) while the Cavaliers drop to 4-3 (1-2 ACC).

Following the win, the Tar Heels remain unbeaten and improve to 7-0 (3-0 ACC) while the Cavaliers drop to 4-3 (1-2 ACC).
How It Happened
- Olivia Vergano had back-to-back goals in a two minute span to put UNC ahead, 3-1, by the halfway point of the opening frame.
- Vergano made it a first-quarter hat trick with 3:34 on the clock to give Carolina a 4-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes. That goal started a 6-0 run that would last until 6:06 in the second.
- Chloe Humphrey had a hat trick of her own in the second quarter with three goals in a six-minute stretch to put the home team up 9-2, their largest lead of the first half.
- Virginia tallied four unanswered before C. Humphrey broke up that run with her fourth of the quarter.
- The Cavaliers tacked on another one with five seconds remaining but the Tar Heels carried a 10-7 lead into the break, having out-shot the visitors 21-12 and 18-10 on goal.
- Lexi Zenk subbed in between the pipes at the start of the second half and made four saves to anchor a defensive unit that did not allow a goal in the third quarter.
- All four goals scored in the third came from Tar Heels with Eliza Osburn netting the first two to spark a 7-0 run through 8:55 in the final quarter.
- Carolina continued to pour them in during the fourth with five players combining for six goals. Addison Pattillo scored the last two late down the stretch.
- Having out-scored the Cavaliers 10-1 in the second half, the Tar Heels picked up their seventh straight win with a final score of 20-8.
- C. Humphrey finished with a game-high eight points behind a game-high five goals plus three assists.
- A. Humphrey led all players with six assists, also adding a goal for seven points.
- UNC finished with a 39-32 lead in shots, including 33-20 on goal.
- Carolina had nine caused turnovers to Virginia's four. Kaleigh Harden and Kate Levy had two each.
- The Tar Heels also ended with a 22-12 advantage in ground balls. Levy had a game- and career-high five.
- Virginia edged out Carolina with a 19-11 edge from the circle. Harden had a team-high four draw controls.
- Betty Nelson and Zenk combined for 12 saves with the latter making a career-high eight during the second half.
- This marked Carolina's third top 15 victory this season.
- UNC extended its record to 37-14 in the all-time series with UVA, including 14-8 for games played in Chapel Hill.
- The Tar Heels have yet to allow double-digit goals this season. They have limited opponents to an average of 5.0 goals per game.
- A. Humphrey matched her season-high six assists for the second time, tying the most she has had at UNC. She is now just one assist away from ranking in the program's top 10 for career assists.
- C. Humphrey has registered five or more goals in four of her seven games. She leads the roster with 29 goals.
