March 25, 2025 | Men's Golf
University of North Carolina senior David Ford, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, won his fifth collegiate title with a record-setting performance Tuesday at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
Ford, the No. 1 player in both the NCAA ranking (Scoreboard/Clippd) and PGA TOUR U standings, shot 69-63-64 for an 18-under 195 total to win for the third time this season.
Ford defeated one of the strongest tournament fields in college golf this season. No. 1-ranked Auburn, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 8 UNC and six other top-25 teams competed. Those teams included five of the top-10 and 10 of the top-25 ranked players in the country.
Oklahoma's Jase Summy and Texas' Daniel Bennett finished second, two strokes behind Ford at 16-under 197. Other notable players included Auburn's Jackson Koivun, the 2024 National Player of the Year, who was fourth, FSU's Luke Clanton was seventh, ASU's Josele Ballester finished 16th and Auburn's Brendan Valdes was 32nd.
Ford's 195 strokes equal the fewest in a 54-hole tournament by a Tar Heel (Hampton Roberts shot 195 last month in finishing second in the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawai'i). Ford's 18-under score to par equals the third best in a tournament by a Tar Heel.
Ford's 195 is four better than his previous collegiate best (199 last season at Amer Ari) and 18 under is one stroke better than his 17 under at Amer Ari last year.
Ford also set the Valspar Collegiate Invitational's 54-hole record, breaking the previous lows of 14-under 199 by Clanton in 2024; Pepperdine's Dylan Menante in 2022; and Oklahoma State's Matthew Wolff in 2019.
The Peachtree Corner, Ga., native also broke his own UNC record for lowest stroke total in consecutive rounds with the second-round 63 and today's final round 64. He held the previous record with matching 64s in the final two rounds at Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Classic in the fall of 2022.
Texas won the team title, setting the tournament record at 36-under 816. The Longhorns were 13 strokes better than runner-up Arizona State (829). The Seminoles (830) were third, Oklahoma fourth (831) and defending national champion Auburn was fifth (832).
Carolina (284-278-284) shot even-par in the final round for the second time in the tournament and placed 11th at 6-under 846.
Keaton Vo (67-69-74) tied for 25th at 3-under 210, Ethan Paschal (70-74-74) tied for 63rd at 5-over 218, Hampton Roberts (79-72-72) tied for 76th at 10-over 223 and Maxwell Ford (80-84-74) was 92nd at 25-over 238.
