Men's Golf First In Stroke, Advance To Match Play In ACC Championships
April 21, 2024 | Men's Golf
The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished first in stroke play for the third time in four seasons following the final round Sunday in the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Charlotte Country Club.
Â
Playing in cold, wet and blustery conditions, the Tar Heels shot 6-over 290 in the third round but finished 10-under-par 842 to beat three teams – Florida State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest – by six shots. Those three teams all finished 4 under par for the tournament and advance with UNC to Monday's semifinal matches, which begin at 7:30 a.m.
Â
Carolina came into the tournament as the top seed and earned the No. 1 draw in match play, where the Tar Heels will face Wake Forest. The Yellow Jackets and Seminoles will square off in the other semifinal with the winning teams competing for the ACC title Monday afternoon.
Â
Austin Greaser and Peter Fountain led the Tar Heels with a pair of top-10 finishes.
Â
Greaser (68-69-70) tied for third at 6-under 207, just one stroke off the winning score shot by Wake Forest's Michael Brennan and Florida State's Frederik Kjettrup. They tied for the lead at 7 under, played five extra holes to a draw and were declared co-medalists.
Â
It was Greaser's second top-five performance in an ACC Championship. He tied for fifth in 2021.
Â
Fountain became the first Tar Heel to place in the top 10 three times in the ACC Championship since Dustin Bray in 2004. Fountain had the 36-hole lead after shooting 67-67 but fell to eighth after a 77 on Sunday. He shot 2-under 211 for the tournament. Fountain won the title in 2021 and finished second after a playoff the following season.
Â
Bray was medalist in 2002, tied for ninth in 2003 and seventh in 2004.
Â
Maxwell Ford (70-73-70) tied for 12th at even-par 213, David Ford (70-68-79) tied for 26th at 4-over 217 and Dylan Menante (75-73-73) tied for 40th at 8-over 221.
Â
Carolina began the day 16 under par and took it to 22 under after making seven birdies on the first three holes but made a combined five birdies over the final 15 holes as playing conditions worsened.
Â
The Tar Heels also won the stroke play portion of the ACC Championship 11 times from 1956-2006, which determined the champion, and 2021 and 2022, when match play was introduced.
Â
The pairings for Monday's match vs. Wake Forest include:
Â
Dylan Menante (UNC) vs. Collin Adams (WF)
Peter Fountain (UNC) vs. Scotty Kennon (WF)
Austin Greaser (UNC) vs. Marshall Meisel (WF)
