No. 14 Men’s Lacrosse Handles Providence, 25-8

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With goals from 12 different players, No. 14 North Carolina men's lacrosse (7-3, 1-1) posted a decisive 25-8 win over Providence (4-5) Saturday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
UNC's 25 goals, which are the fifth-most ever scored in program history, matches the most recorded this year for the third time.
How It Happened
- Two quick goals from Logan McGovern sparked a 6-0 run for the Tar Heels nine minutes into the game.
- McGovern made it a hat trick – his third in as many games and fifth of the year – with 6:11 on the clock, making it four with two seconds left on the clock.
- Goals from six different players gave the Tar Heels a 9-2 advantage at the end of the opening frame.
- Andrew Tyeryar found the back of the cage for the second time just six seconds into the second quarter.
- UNC's defense limited Providence to just one goal during the second quarter, and four unanswered goals gave the home team a 15-3 lead at the break.
- McGovern matched his career-high five goals at the beginning of the second half, while Andrew Tyeryar and Trevor Deubner also got hat tricks in the third.
- The Tar Heels out-scored the Friars 8-1 in the third frame, holding a 23-4 edge heading into the final 15 minutes.
- Edwin Shy notched the first goal of his career with five minutes remaining to seal the 25-8 victory.
Tar Heel Performances
- Carolina had 12 different goal scorers, its fourth time this year having 10+ players tally at least one.
- McGovern matched his career-high five goals, which was first set on Feb. 29, 2020, during his redshirt-freshman year at Bryant.
- James Matan and Ryan Levy had a game-high three assists, which was the first multi-assist game of Levy's career.
- Troy Exum registered his first career save between the pipes as three UNC keepers combined for 11 saves
- Not only did Deubner have his first career hat trick, it was also his first multi-goal game.
- Three players in Luca Antongiovanni, Michael Lizzo and Shy recorded the first goals of their career.
Inside the Numbers
- North Carolina extended its all-time series with Providence to 5-0.
- Sean Goldsmith has recorded at least one point in 49 of his 51 career games, and McGovern has tallied at least one in 43 of his 45 career games.
- UNC's 15 goals at the break was the second-most it has scored during an opening half this season, one shy of its 16 during the first 30 minutes vs. Mercer.
- Under head coach Joe Breschi, the Tar Heels are 91-13 when allowing nine goals or fewer.
- Saturday's win was the eighth time this season the Tar Heels have allowed less than 10 goals in a single contest.
