Carolina Champions for Third Straight Year at Eagle Point
Tar Heel junior David Ford made an 8-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Tuesday to win medalist honors and the University of North Carolina won the Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf at the Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., for the third consecutive season.
Ford shot 66-70 in the first two rounds yesterday to lead after both the first and second rounds, but gave up a five-shot lead on the back nine today, making bogeys on four of the last eight holes to shoot 76. North Florida's Nick Gabrelcik, like Ford a former first-team All-America and member of the U.S. Walker Cup team, shot 3-under 69 to hold the clubhouse lead with a 54-hole total of 4-under 212.
Ford parred 18 in regulation and the two went back to the 505-yard, par-5 18th tee to begin the playoff. Ford hit his approach from 101 yards to eight feet. Gabrelcik then two-putted for par and Ford rolled in the 8-footer for his second collegiate win and first since the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Seminole Golf Club almost one year to the day (Oct. 11, 2022).
Carolina won the team title by 18 strokes over Auburn. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 1 in the country by the coaches and No. 2 by Golfweek, while the Tigers hold the top spot in Golfweek's rankings.
The Tar Heels shot 274-286-293 for an 11-under par 853 total. That was 14 strokes better than UNC's winning score in 2022.
Auburn was 7-over 871, Arizona State was third at 12 over, defending NCAA champion Florida, North Florida and Louisville all tied for fourth at 23 over.
A pair of Tar Heels joined Ford in the top three. Dylan Menante (70-71-73) and Austin Greaser (68-75-71) tied for third at 2-under 214.
Only eight of the 60 players in the field finished the 54-hole tournament under par.
Gabrelcik shot 70-73-69 to join Ford in the playoff and finish second.
Florida's Tyler Wilkes, playing as an individual entry, shot 66 Tuesday, the low round of the day, and also tied for third.
Carolina's Peter Fountain, also playing as an individual entry, made an ace on his first hole of the day, the 161-yard 10th hole. It was the senior's first collegiate hole-in-one and the first by a Tar Heel since Greaser made a one in the 2023 NCAA Championship. Fountain shot 69 today, UNC's best round of the day.
It was the Tar Heels' second team title of the season and 17th in Andrew DiBitetto's seven seasons as head coach. UNC has won the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, finished second in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational and won the Williams Cup in three starts this fall.
UNC returns to competition October 23-25 in Scotland against Georgetown, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt in the first St Andrews Links Collegiate.
