CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After a two-week hiatus from competition, the University of North Carolina gymnastics team will return to action to host UW-Stout and Yale in a nonconference tri-meet on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. ET.Â
The meet will be broadcast on ACCNX with Sydney Snead and Brian Waer on call.Â
Monday will also serve as Kids Club Day with face painting, coloring stations, Disney characters and more available. Admission is free and open to the public.
This will mark the second of five home meets this season for the Tar Heels, who had a dominant 196.225-195.525 victory in their last outing on Jan. 9 against NC State. UNC's team score was the highest in program history during a home opener, besting the previous mark of 195.975 from Feb. 17, 2002.
Leading the way for Carolina was Lali Dekanoidze and Julia Knower, both sophomores who combined to post the meet's top marks on all events versus the Wolfpack. Dekanoidze impressed with a 9.975 on bars, becoming UNC's outright program record holder and moving to No. 2 in the nation this season. She also matched her career best on vault (9.900).Â
Knower earned her first all-around title of the season – and fifth of her career – with a score of 39.450, which set a new career high and moved to No. 8 all-time in UNC history. Her scores on each of the four apparatuses ranked in the meet's top-3, also setting new personal bests on bars (9.850) and floor (9.925).
For their efforts, Dekanoidze was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Specialist of the Week while Knower was tabbed Gymnast of the Week. It was Dekanoidze's sixth weekly EAGL award of her career and the fourth for Knower.
The Tar Heels checked in at No. 27 in the first WCGA poll of the year, its best preseason ranking since 2007 and the highest among league competitors. UNC also led the EAGL preseason poll with 48 points and one first-place vote, just ahead of NC State and Temple which tied for second behind 46 points and one top vote apiece.Â
