May 17, 2022 | Men's Golf
Greaser's 63, Gerard's 65, Team's 267 Set/Tie UNC Records
Austin Greaser tied the University of North Carolina 18-hole score in NCAA regional play, Ryan Gerard shot 65 for the second consecutive day and the Tar Heels surged to within a stroke of the lead with a blistering 13-under-par 267, its lowest team score ever in regional action on day two of the NCAA Yale Regional Tuesday at the Yale Golf Course.
Carolina's 267 total is a season best and the second-lowest round ever by the Tar Heels. It is two shots off the school record of 265 set in 2021 in the ACC Championship second round. UNC's previous best round in NCAA regional action was 273 in the second round of the 1998 regional in Daufuskie Island, S.C. at the Melrose Golf Course.
Greaser made eight birdies, including seven of his first 12 holes, to shoot 7-under 63 to move up to second place in the individual standings, a shot behind Gerard. The Vandalia, Ohio native's 63 ties the low round by a Tar Heel in an NCAA regional, which another current teammate, Ryan Burnett shot as a freshman in 2019 at the NCAA Stanford Regional.
Gerard, a fifth-year senior from Raleigh, is the solo leader after 36 holes. He followed his opening-round 65 with another 5-under 65 today as he made four birdies and eagled the par-5 16th hole. Gerard is the first Tar Heel with five career rounds of 65 or better. He shot a school-record 61 at Notre Dame in 2018 and had three other 65s prior to today. Gerard is also the first Tar Heel ever with two rounds of 65 or better in NCAA regional play.
Greaser and Gerard combined to make only two bogeys in the second round.
The Tar Heels entered the day tied for fifth place after a first-round 7-under-par 273. In addition to Greaser's 63 and Gerard's 65, Peter Fountain shot a 2-under 68, Burnett shot 71 and freshman David Ford finished with a 72.
Carolina's 13-under-par total was the best round of the day by five strokes over Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons have the lead after 36 holes at 21 under, one shot ahead of the Tar Heels. North Florida and Georgia Southern are tied for third at 12 under, Texas Tech is fifth at 10 under and Illinois is sixth at 5 under
