UNCW Defeats Men's Soccer, 2-1

WILMINGTON, N.C.— North Carolina fell to UNC Wilmington, 2-1, in a close midweek match-up. Despite a scoreless first half, both teams were able to find the back of the net in the final 45 minutes. UNCW tallied two shots in the second half, both resulting in a goal.
Following a shut-out win over Virginia on Saturday, the Tar Heels' record fell to 5-3-1 this season. UNCW improves to 5-3-0.
Carolina was ranked No. 11 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and No. 19 by College Soccer News. UNC Wilmington was unranked.
Carolina and UNCW each took 4 shots in the opening 45 minutes. Alec Smir tallied 3 saves in the first half, while UNC Wilmington's goal keeper, Gabriel Perrotta, earned 2.
The nature of the game shifted in the 54th minute. After UNCW's Perrotta saved a close opportunity by Santiago Herrera, Nicolas Molina from UNCW was given a red card for a sliding tackle on Matthew Senanou. For the final 36 minutes, UNCW was limited to 10 players on the field.
Despite being down a player, UNCW was able to strike first and take a 1-0 lead.
A foul committed by Senanou gave UNCW a free kick to the left of the goal and just outside of the box. The free kick resulted in a goal.
North Carolina was able to tie the game in the 80th minute on a goal from Tim Schels. The goal marked Schels' first of the 2021 season and the second of his career.
UNCW responded less than two minutes later to regain a 2-1 lead off of a corner kick.
In the game, UNC out-shot UNCW, 11-6. North Carolina was also able to take 7 corner kicks, compared to the two for UNCW.
The Tar Heels are back at home for a Sunday night match-up against NC State on Sunday October 3 at 7 p.m.
