Tar Heels Fifth After Day 2 At ACC Championships

RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Daniel McArthur fell an inch short of the Atlantic Coast Conference men's shot put championship but still set a school record on Friday in Day 2 action at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
McArthur's throw of 19.73 (64-8 ¾) was an outdoor PR for him. Virginia Tech's Tyson Jones threw a 64-9 ¾ , also a personal best. In fact, the top five finishers and eight off 17 overall set new personal best, including Madias Loper, seventh with a throw of 17.65m.
The men's shot put was the second final of the day, and also UNC's second medal. In the opening event, women's javelin, Madison Wiltrout took third with a throw of 52.98m (173-10).
Two Tar Heel medals Friday raised UNC's count to six overall. After two days of competition at NC State's Paul Derr Track & Field Complex, the Tar Heels sit at fifth in both the men's and women's team standings.
Several Tar Heels had lifetime bests on Friday. Freshmen Sasha Neglia and Sarah Trainor both had personal bests in the women's steeplechase, with Neglia seventh overall and Trainor 11th. In the men's steeplechase, Alex Milligan placed sixth and Marshall Williamson 14th, both with lifetime bests. Milligan's time of 8:39.95 ranks second in school history and Williamson's run of 8:54.34 ranks eighth.
Several Tar Heels has strong runs, including lifetime bests, to advance to Saturday's finals. In the women's 400 meters, freshman Brianna White ran a PR off 54.42 to earn a spot on Saturday. In the men's 400, Isaiah Palmer placed fifth to reach the final. Ryan Saint-Germain ran a PR of 46.88 but just missed the final.
Dolan Owens won his heat in the men's 800m with the third-fastest time of the day to reach the final.
Day 3 action begins on Saturday at 2.
