
Gymnastics To Host NC State on Friday Night

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's gymnastics team will host North Carolina State University on Friday night at 7 p.m. after taking second place behind them at the quad meet in Raleigh last weekend. This weekend's rematch will be the Tar Heel's first home meet of the season after inclement weather caused their meet against George Washington to be postponed.
After taking second place in the quad meet last weekend, the Tar Heels hold a record of 3-1 (2-0 EAGL). North Carolina was able to improve their record-setting season-opening score of 195.200 to 195.600 in the quad meet and hopes to continue to build upon this on Friday night.
"We're definitely excited. It was great to see some new routines going out there," said interim Head Coach Marie Denick. "It's great as a coach to see that, but it makes our jobs harder to put line ups together. We're excited because we are putting better line ups together each week."
QUAD MEET RECAP
North Carolina placed second in the NC State Quad Meet on Saturday with a score of 195.600 behind NC State (196.025) but ahead of Towson (194.475), and Pittsburgh (192.125).
It was the highest score in North Carolina's second meet of a season since posting a 195.300 Jan. 19, 2018.
Hannah Nam recorded a career-high 9.875 on the beam, while Elizabeth Culton led the Tar Heels with a 9.950 in the first rotation. Jamie Shearer posted a 9.775, Hallie Thompson a 9.750 and Brianna Greenlow a 9.675. After the first rotation, the Tar Heels paced the field with a 49.025.
North Carolina remained in first place after the second rotation on the floor in part to Shailyn St. Brice and Culton's 9.800 scores. Freshman Kate Green and Nam recorded a 9.775, while Greenlow posted a 9.750. After the second rotation, the Tar Heels combined for a 97.925.
On the vault, Hallie Thompson scored a UNC-best 9.825. Emery Summey recorded a 9.800, while Drew Aldridge (9.750), Greenlow (9.650), and Jamie Shearer (9.600) rounded out the Tar Heels in the third rotation.
The Tar Heels finished on the bars Saturday night and were led by Culton, who finished her night with a 9.850. Green impressed on the bars with a 9.825, while Hallie Thompson ended her evening with a 9.800. Shearer placed fourth among the Tar Heels with a score of 9.725 while Emery Summey posted a 9.675.
THE OPPONENT
North Carolina State University took first place in the quad meet they hosted last weekend and currently hold a record of 7-1 (2-0 EAGL). North Carolina State's only loss this season was to Pittsburgh in a in a Tri-meet. Friday night's match up will be the second of two competitions between these close EAGL opponents who currently hold first and second place in the conference.
"It was definitely a close meet last week at NC State and that really motivated our team to get back in the gym and just really focus on the details," said Denick. "We've been doing a great job of being consistent and making routines, so now it's just really focusing on the details, and landings, and seeing if we can get a few more stuck dismounts, pointed toes, and tight legs throughout to minimize deductions."
