RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina (193.700) fell to NC State (195.850) Saturday afternoon in Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum to become 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. Carolina won two events, vault and beam, and scored their highest rotation score on beam (49.225) since scoring the same at Oklahoma on February 11, 2018.
Carolina opened the day on bars with a rotation score of 47.325. Grace Donaghy led the Tar Heels with a 9.725, finishing in sixth place. Mekyllah Williams finished with a 9.675 in seventh place. Drew Aldridge and Rylie Dewhurst finished in eighth and ninth with scores of 9.550 and 9.500, respectively.
"Unfortunately, it took us too long to get focused," said North Carolina coach Derek Galvin. "This is going to be a test of our resolve... We can't expect to be a team that expects to compete for an NCAA birth with that type of performance on bars."
The Tar Heels moved over to vault for their second rotation. With a team score of 48.950, Carolina continued it's streak of scoring 48.900+ to four consecutive meets. Leading the Tar Heels with scores of 9.850 was Mikayla Robinson and Khazia Hislop, tying for second place in the meet. Robinson followed by tying her season high and scoring a 9.825 for her fourth consecutive meet, placing tied for fifth. Hargrave placed seventh with a 9.800.
