CHAPEL HILL - Freshman Mauricio Pineda scored three goals to lead the eighth-ranked North Carolina men's soccer team to its most goals in seven years on Tuesday night during a 7-0 victory over UNC Asheville from Fetzer Field.

Pineda was the lone multi-goal scorer on the evening as the freshman from Bolingbrook, Illinois, registered his first collegiate hat trick.

North Carolina (9-2-1) matched its highest goal output since a 7-0 win over Stetson in 2009.

Zach Wright put Carolina on the board just 60 seconds into play. Cam Lindley played a ball to the chest of Tucker Hume, and he sent a cross that Wright tapped past the Asheville keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Fellow Texan Alan Winn made it 2-0 in the 15th minute. Nico Melo began the play from the corner spot, found the head of Walker Hume and Winn did the rest with a right-footed blast that ricochetted off a defender.

Just over eight minutes later, the Tar Heels scored a carbon-copy goal of the previous tally. Melo's corner found Walker Hume and his header to the front of the goal was punched in by Pineda for a 3-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

The first-half onslaught continued in the 32nd minute when Pineda scored again to make it 4-0 in favor of Carolina. Walker Hume earned another assist, while captain Colton Storm also registered an assist with his cross into the box.

The Tar Heels added a fifth goal in the 73rd minute. A first touch shot by freshman Jeremy Kelly, off a low cross from David October, was the second of the year for the Chapel Hill native.

Andy Lopez assisted on Kelly's goal and picked up another when his free kick was touched home by Pineda in the 82nd minute.

Nils Bruening, on his eighth shot of the game, scored on a pass from David Mejia to close out the scoring.

Carolina visits ACC foe Duke on Friday at 7 p.m.
