Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina beat Temple Friday by a score of194.425-191.150, and improved to 9-1 on the season. This was the second meeting of the two teams this season, the first at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, where UNC took first. Junior Elizabeth Durkac won the all-around title with a 39.225.
The Heels started on vault winning at a 48.700, with senior Zoya Johnson leading the field scoring 9.875. Senior Morgan Evans followed in second place overall with a 9.825, and Durkac tied for third with a 9.725. Senior Taylor Brown and sophomore Kristin Aloi rounded out the group with scores of 9.650 and 9.625, respectively.
Next, UNC competed on the uneven bars and totaled a 48.775, winning the event. Durkac won the individual race with a 9.850, tying her personal best, and Evans placed second at 9.800. Sophomores Acacia Cosentino and Emily Cornwell tied for third, each with 9.750 which broke each of their personal bests. Johnson completed the event for the Heels, earning a 9.625.
Carolina posted a score of 48.200 on the balance beam to take the event, led by Durkac who tied her personal best of 9.850 and took first in the individual race. Junior Maura Masatsugu followed close behind in second place with a 9.800, and Freshman Janell Sargent made her debut on the beam at 9.725. Senior Krista Jasper earned a 9.700, and freshman Haley Watts finished with a 9.125.
UNC's final rotation was floor exercise and the Heels scored a 48.750, to take their fourth event of the day. Evans' 9.850 was good for first place in the event, while Aloi and Durkac tied for second with a 9.800. Jasper followed for the Heels in fourth at a 9.675, and Brown finished with a 9.625.
Durkac won her second all-around title of the season with a total of 39.225, a personal best. Evans finished in second place at 38.525.
The Heels are back in action Friday, February 24 at 7:00 against George Washington.
