Heels Win Against Maryland

Chapel Hill, N.C.- North Carolina beat Maryland 195.225-192.600 Friday in Carmichael Arena. This was the second meeting between the two schools in six days, and the teams split the home-and-home series. UNC senior Morgan Evans and junior Elizabeth Durkac took first and second place in the all-around competition as the Tar Heels scored their best overall score of the year.
UNC's first event was the vault, scoring a team total of 48.700. Senior Zoya Johnson led the Heels, tying for second place with a 9.850. Evans was close behind scoring a 9.800, in front of Durkac at 9.650. Sophomore Kristin Aloi rounded out the event, earning 9.675.
The Heels were on the uneven bars second, tying with the Terps overall at 48.525. Evans and Durkac tied for first place in the event, scoring 9.775. Johnson followed with a 9.675, and sophomores Acacia Cosentino and Emily Cornwell tied at 9.650.
North Carolina had a stunning performance on the balance beam, with a team total of 48.950 to win the event. Junior Maura Masatsugu had a nearly flawless routine, coming in first place overall and scoring a 9.900, beating her personal best of 9.850. Durkac was second in the event with a 9.825, and senior Krista Jasper followed tied for third with a 9.775. Evans recorded a 9.750, and Freshman Haley Watts earned a 9.700. In her exhibition routine, freshman Janelle Sargent was given an impressive 9.850.
Finishing on floor exercise, the Tar Heels recorded a 49.050 to win the event. Jasper took first with a 9.850. Evans and Durkac tied for second on the event with a 9.825, which beat Durkac's personal best of 9.800. Brown and Ikoma finished out the day with 9.800 and 9.750, respectively.
Evans totaled 39.150 for first place all-around, and Durkac earned 39.075for second. Maryland's Kelsey Cofsky took third with 38.050.
The Tar Heels are now 8-1, and their next meet is Friday, February 17 at 7:00 in Chapel Hill against Temple.
