
Tar Heels Win Home Opener

Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina won its home opener Sunday against William & Mary, beating the Tribe 193.425-189.450 at the annual Pink & Blue Meet in Carmichael Arena.
Coach Derek Galvin was excited to open in Chapel Hill on a good note. "The quality of the routines was very good, I was very pleased with that. I think it was a good home meet," he said. He also appreciates the 3,548 fans that came out to support the team. "It's a lot easier to perform when they have a loud, energetic, enthusiastic crowd."
As a team, UNC won each event. Senior Morgan Evans won the all-around competition with a 38.625 and Elizabeth Durkac was second scoring 38.575. William & Mary's Jess Pritchard was third with a 38.350.
Carolina competed on vault first and scored a team total of 48.575. Senior Zoya Johnson tallied a 9.900, which ties her all-time score. Evans scored 9.800, followed by sophomore Kristin Aloi with a 9.650. Johnson, Evans, and Aloi earned the top scores overall for the event. Senior Taylor Brown and junior Michelle Ikoma followed with a 9.625 and 9.600, respectively.
Evans, Durkac, and Johnson swept the top spots overall on the uneven bars. Evans scored 9.875 and Durkac earned 9.850. Durkac broke her previous personal best of 9.825. Johnson took a 9.825, tying her all-time high score. Sophomore Emily Cornwell and Brown rounded out the event with a 9.725 and 9.700. Brown also outscored her personal best of 9.650. The team total was 48.975.
Johnson and fellow senior Krista Jasper were first and second overall on the balance beam. They scored 9.700 and 9.650, respectively. Durkac also earned a 9.450, followed by Aloi at 9.200 and Junior Maura Masatsugu at 9.175. As a team, UNC scored 47.175.
The Tar Heels finished the meet on floor exercise, tallying 48.700. Aloi and Evans tied for first overall with 9.850, while Durkac took third with 9.800. Durkac broke her second personal best of the day, with her previous high at 9.775. Freshman Haley Watts made her floor debut and finished with a 9.750, and Brown ended with a 9.450.
The Tar Heels improve to 6-0 as they look forward to their next meet on February 5 at Maryland.
